GETTING MARRIED IN SUTTON AND WAWNE

1. You are most welcome to marry in any of the following 4 churches - St James', Sutton : St Peter's, Wawne: St Andrew's, Sutton Park: St John's, Bransholme.

2. If one or both of you live in the parish, you may get married here after your Banns have been called here. If one of you lives outside the parish, you will need to have your Banns called both here and in the other parish. We need to see a certificate to say that Banns have been called in the other parish before we can marry you.

3. The Banns are called about 2 months before you get married. The Banns should be called where you are living at that time - so one or both of you need to be living in the parish at that stage.

4. If neither of you are living in the parish, you have 2 options. Either you can get yourselves onto our Electoral Roll by being "regular at worship for a 6 month period" (and you are then entitled to have your Banns called), or, you can get married by Common License (without Banns). To qualify for a License, one, or both of you, has to spend 15 consecutive nights at a residential address in the parish. You then have to swear on oath before a Registrar, who will give you a license to marry within the next few months.

5. Please note that whether it is arranging for your Banns to be called in another parish, or coming to church regularly for 6 months, or arranging for a License, these are your responsibility.

6. Failure to comply with the legal regulations will mean that your wedding cannot take place. In order to fully comply, you will need to complete the form 'Church of England Marriage Measures 2008", which is available from the Church Office, or as a download below.

More information to help you plan your wedding

Videos .. you are welcome to have your wedding video-recorded, subject to the following conditions:

  1. Only one person is to be involved.
  2. The operator remains stationary.
  3. The operator comes to the rehearsal, so that a recording location can be agreed.
  4. The operator signs the accompanying Declaration and brings it to the rehearsal.

Photography .. You are welcome to have your wedding photographed, subject to the following conditions:

  1. Once you enter the church, until the end of the ceremony, only non-flash photographs, taken from the back of the church, are permitted.
  2. The photographer is welcome in the vestry for the signing of the registers.
  3. As you process out of the church, photographs are permitted from the Chancel steps onwards.
Please advise your photographer of these conditions - direct him/her to this webpage, or print it off for them.

Confetti .. You are welcome to use confetti, but we would be grateful if you could use it well away from the church door, and preferably outside the church garden.

Collection .. No collection will be taken during your wedding service, but please do remember that the expenses of running the church are very considerable - so please encourage your wedding party to use the bowls at the back of the church. Thank you.

Hymns .. Most weddings have 2 or 3 hymns. If you want help in choosing suitable hymns, do please ask for help.

Bible Reading .. You will need to choose a reading from the Bible. Again, if you want help with this, please ask for our selection of suitable readings.

Music .. You will need to think about what music you want played as you come in, go out, and as the registers are signed. We have a small choir and a helpful organist. Again, please ask if you need help.

Prayers .. There are some set prayers in the service, but if you would like to choose or write some of your own, please ask.

Service Sheets .. Most couples have an Order of Service sheet printed. You are welcome to make your own arrangements, or we will produce them for you at £50 per 100.

We thank you for your co-operation, and we look forward to your wedding.
