Greetings to all the children at Wawne School, and especially to Jacob, who signed our Guestbook to tell me how much he enjoys school, and says the Head Teacher is fun. |

The Head Teacher devised a Victorian Topic for the children to follow as part of their history studies. Mr Crabb's method is reproduced here below, with his permission, and he felt it might be useful for others to follow when researching their own local family history. It is such a straightforward method, and one that yields a surprising amount of information, as well as providing a template that can be used anywhere. Use and enjoy ... you never know where it may lead .... My Internet Research to find the names of children who were at school in Wawne in 1881. I searched for – '1881 census Wawne' I entered the website for St. James Church, Sutton, and doubleclicked on the 1901 and 1881 census information. When the page opened, I scrolled down to the 1881 census and doubleclicked. I was now at the census details. I typed in Peter Hardy, birth place, England York, and placed the year as 1870 and a range of +/- 20 years. Peter Hardy was 10 and a scholar at Wawne School. By clicking on "household", I found out who else in his family were also attending school. By clicking on "next" or "previous household", I was able to 'travel' round Wawne and find out who was living in the village in 1881. I made a list of children who were at school in Wawne in 1881.
This plan would work just about anywhere, but is especially ideal for a small village like Wawne. All that information, from 123 years ago, just by a few clicks of a mouse. Incredible !!
And now you've suffered all of that, here's a useful link: Wawne Primary School website .. a new site as of June 2007 |
