Sadly, St Mark's on Bellfield Avenue
is now closed for normal services,
though meetings are still held there.

The postcodes are to help visitors find our churches in
Streetmap or Multimap
to enable them to be on time for Weddings, etc.
Multimap has the advantage of being able to see
a 'bird's-eye view' of any of the churches,
from four different angles, but please
bear in mind these photos are at least 4 years old.

DO YOU LOVE FLOWERS ? Valerie's Flowers
A little birdy tells me . . .

.. . that DOVE HOUSE HOSPICE
are in need of some more
volunteer Flower Ladies to
help with the arrangements
of the enormous numbers of flowers
that arrive at the hospice
on almost a daily basis.

No previous experience is needed,
just a love of flowers
and a willingness to help.
If you have a morning to spare,
even for just once a month,
and can arrange even just
few flowers in a vase,
or have always yearned to be
in a flower arranging team,
they'd really love your help.
DOVE HOUSE WEBSITE
- and go to the "Volunteering" page
to see info about Flower Arrangers
Naturally, volunteers are also much appreciated
in ANY capacity,
whether driving, gardening,
housekeeping or fundraising ...
it all helps .... if you'd like to help,
do visit their website,
or phone (01482) 784343

RAF Station, Sutton on Hull

In the Autumn of 2003,
on Wednesday, September 24th
a Commemorative Blue Plaque to remember
all Personnel who served was presented to
the Community by the late Len Bacon in a Ceremony at the
Library in North Point Shopping Centre.

The plaque has been sponsored
from the profits of Len's book,
HULL'S OWN AIR FORCE STATION
and is now affixed to the library wall.

It commemorates the hundreds of RAF personnel who manned
the Balloon site that helped to give greater protection to Hull
than the city would otherwise have had by maintaining the
Barrage Balloon Defences right throughout the Blitz.

see the plaque to
RAF SUTTON on HULL

We must also add our own thanks
that Len completed this project before his
untimely death on 21 Aug 2007.

Details of Leonard C Bacon's book
about RAF Sutton on Hull, are now on the
PUBLICATIONS PAGE
or at the Balloon Barrage Reunion Club website.

all ex-pupils are especially welcome!

OTHER MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

We welcome information supplied by Parish organisations, Scouts, sports clubs, ex-Servicemen, other sites run by and for Senior Citizens and disabled people, and any historic or specific local connections.

The link to St James' School, for ages 4 to 11,
on Dorchester Road, is :
http://www.st-james.hull.sch.uk
The Pupils' Philosophy is especially commendable,
as is "The Thinking Cap".
I've long needed a cap that can think .. .
where can I get one . . . Size 9 and 12/16ths ..?

There are some pictures of the church in
Sutton Gallery 1
Use as you will, feel free to copy, print,
send to relatives, etc.
They are Copyright Free to private users,
as are any to do with the War Memorial.

I expect commercial organisations to ask, though,
if they want to use them. It's only polite, after all.

Many details of the
War Memorial
are now on their own page.
and we've also added a page of
Brief Biographies
of just a few of those from this Parish who died
in the service of their country.

There are also more details, and links, to
F/Lt PC Hughes DFC,
the Australian RAF pilot buried in
St James' churchyard in 1940.
Viewers may be now pleased to hear that
my email enquiries have at last bore fruit.
Original enquiries to the local library of Haberfield, the town in New South Wales where F/Lt Hughes was thought to come from, drew a blank. Then I wrote to a Bronwen Hughes, hoping she may be a relative, after finding her name in an Internet Email Directory. It is Bronwen that turned up all the new information . . and is delighted to find that she is indeed related to this brave man after all. The full story of how it all came about is on a new page, and the link is at the bottom of the
War Graves Page

The Hull Blitz . . . some maps
this link is to a page that will lead to a new window and a set of 16 scans of a large streetmap of Hull, dated 1945, onto which the authorities at the time entered details of all falls of bombs for the period 1940-44. Each section loads separately in a new window, and was roughly A4 in size.
There is a link to bring you back to these pages.

The Family History Page
now has links to some fascinating
aerial views of Hull,
both ancient & modern !

WEBMASTER MUGSHOT ?

Several people have expressed curiosity as to the identity
of Rob, who reckons to look after these web pages.
He also reckons he's the "bees knees" . . .
If you really want to know what he looks like,
and you're sure you can stand the shock,
then by all means, click here now.
It's not a pretty sight . .
If you see this character out and about
in Sutton or Wawne, he should be apprehendid
and thrown into the Old Skoolroom
on a charge of not being able to spell!

Use your "Back" key to return to this page.

A Brief History of The Parish
St James', Sutton on Hull, and St Peters' at Wawne,
are two of the more ancient of
the local East Riding churches in the Hull area.

A Brief History of Sutton & Wawne
by Merrill Rhodes, is on a separate page,
as are the details of Merrill's acclaimed book on the
history of Sutton & Wawne.

It was originally hoped to put St James' Church
fully on the Internet for Christmas 2000, complete with pictures.
We did it, just, with one picture, and went live
on the evening of 23 December 2000 !
We added the other churches of the parish
during the summer months of 2001

A full list of all the Sutton & Wawne War Dead is now
available on separate pages,
and includes the names of (most) men lost from
Stoneferry, and St Marks in the Groves in WW1,
as well as a link to the Civilian War Dead Index for WW2
for all of Northumberland, Durham & Yorkshire:
it includes those lost from Stoneferry & East Hull in WW2

As well as paying due respect, it is hoped this would also be of invaluable aid to people doing Family History research from abroad and other parts of the UK.

But for now, some interesting church links are on our Links Page
And some more general links are on our Other Links Page

For many other links connected with Sutton & Wawne,
go to Google.com , and type in the full village name,
in inverted commas as shown,
or copy this with your mouse,
"SUTTON ON HULL"
. . or WAWNE
. . press Ctrl+C, then paste it into the Google search box
with Ctrl+V . . it's as easy as that.

If you are looking for a stunning Search Engine,
here's one that we can thoroughly recommend . . .
how it searches 300 million pages and return the results
in less than a second, I haven't a clue . . . but it does!

Google.com is fast, unbelievably so,
and can be set to return 100 sites on one page !

It's Blistering !! You won't see the screen for smoke !

From now on, being able to use a search engine well is going to be
as important as being able to drive . . .
Learn to use them, and you'll never look back . . . .

And here's two sites that all British map lovers have been waiting for . .
First; all the Ordnance Survey on the Web. It's simply brilliant !
( Both these following map links open in new Windows . . )
UK Street Map
. . . but it's not just a street map, in the normal sense of
the term, with street names.
It's also the good old Ordnance Survey, with proper, easy-to-read maps.
Type in a place, or Post Code, and up it pops like magic.
Try it with Wawne, East Yorkshire.
(Many places now also have aerial views as well !)

Second; Old Maps, dating back to 1846-1899
brings up a Counties Gazetteer; select your county,
then select your village or town.
More unbelievable history.
Again, look up Yorkshire, then go to the "S" list.

Have Fun !! But, be warned, put the kids to bed now . . .
You'll be up all night!

for those who came from
Rob & Val's Family page

We've found out where our mystery church is . .
it turns out that it is another St James . .
in Bushey in Hertfordshire.
Many thanks to Simon at . .

Suffolk Churches
. . . for the new information.

The first page of this site, complete with a picture of St James' Church
went 'live' on the web at 01.00 on 23 Dec 2000
