Our Work In Schools
In the parish we take school work just as seriously. With the help of a charity, we employ a full time School Liaison Officer who is an experienced teacher as well as an Anglican Priest.
Within the parish boundaries there are 29 schools (22 primaries, 3 high schools, 3 special schools and a VI form college). Included in the primary schools are 1 Aided and 1 Controlled Church of England School and 1 Roman Catholic school. The ministerial team is well represented on the governors teams in the two Anglican schools, including the Schools Liaison Officer who was recently elected as Chair of Governors for one of them. We also have a close relationship with the Roman Catholic school.
Because of the number of schools we have, a tremendous amount of work is generated. Collective Worship is a high priority, 18 schools book the ministry team regularly to lead assemblies and teach classes and are always pleased to see us. We are also in high demand to 'baptise' dolls of various shapes and sizes and 'marry' young couples either in school or in church. These occasions are always taken seriously by the youngsters involved and usually involve some kind of party afterwards. One grandfather even provided a 'limo' for the bride to arrive at church in style.
We are also called upon to present a Christian point of view on various issues raised in the locally agreed syllabus for Religious Education. These teaching sessions can be difficult because children and young people can and do ask some very searching questions expecting honest and relevant answers.
At present our Liaison Officer is spending time supporting staff and pupils in the schools on the list for possible closure or amalgamation. As a parish, we feel that involvement with the politics of the situation is inappropriate but we do want to support people who are feeling insecure. Head Teachers and their staff as well as all those involved in school life seem to appreciate a listening ear or shoulder to cry on and we are lucky to have someone who has the time to offer this particular ministry.
We finish as we began. Children and young people are important to us and we want to offer to them the best opportunity to understand more about the Christian faith and what Jesus Christ can do for them, given the opportunity.
